Plasmonics: active tuning of the resonance and practical applications

ABSTRACT
Localized surface plasmon resonances (LSPR) have attracted much interest since it provides a mechanism for enhancing and controlling many important processes, such as energy transfer, light-harvesting and hot electron generations. The tunability of plasmon resonances has been researched for decades, but only passive tuning can be achieved for metallic nanoparticles through changes of size, shape, composition, or by using different dielectric medium. Active tunability of plasmon resonance over a large spectral region is of significant interest in device applications. In this talk, I will introduce our recent works on active and dynamic tuning of the plasmon resonance, including mechanical stretching of nanoparticle arrays on elastomeric substrates, dynamic switching between the capacitive and conductive regimes through electrochemical oxidation-reduction process,  doped nanocrystals whose free carrier densities can be changed dramatically through doping. Utilizing these approaches, one can design certain nanostructures to achieve unique optical properties. In this talk, I will also talk about our recent progress on transparency window effect with "written-in" characteristic. At last, I will show our understandings on dynamic decay process of plasmon and the physical origin of plasmon.

Curriculum Vitae
Hui Zhang is now a postdoctoral research associate in Rice University, United States. He received his B.Sc. degree in Applied Physics from the University of Science and Technology of China in 2006, and Ph.D. in Theoretical Physics, supervised by Prof. Qing-feng Sun, from the Institute of Physics, Chinese Academy of Sciences in 2011. From 2011 to 2014, he is a postdoctoral researcher at the group of Prof. A. O. Govorov in Ohio University, United States, and then joined Prof. Peter Nordlander's group  in Rice University from Sep. 2011. Hui Zhang's current research is on localized surface plasmon resonance, including electronic and optical properties of nanoparticles, theory of hot electron generation and related applications, plasmonics (e.g., transparency window effect, Fano effect, active tuning etc), quantum plasmonics, circular dichroism effect of nanostructures. So far, Hui Zhang has published 30+ papers with 700+ citations and h-index of 13, including Science Advances, Nature Material, ACS NANO, NANO Lett, ACS Photonics etc, and is a referee for 10+ journals, including Advanced Material, Phys. Rev. Lett., ACS NANO, Nature Scientific Report etc.
